SloWednesday: Fed Up

Rolling Stone calls Fed Up, “a movie that matters”. It is a documentary indictment of the modern American diet. Executive producer and narrator Katie Couric joins Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth), Regina Scully (The Invisible War) and Stephanie Soechtig (Tapped) to reveal how the U.S. government subsidizes a food system that has given us unprecedented levels of diabetes and obesity. The film shows how the food system, with support from your tax dollars, is structurally set up to support illness, not health. Fed Up makes the point that no matter how much willpower a person has, until we fix the food system, Americans will continue to experience some of the highest levels of diet related diseases in the world. Fed Up contends that only 30% of people suffering from diet-related diseases are actually obese; while 70% of us — even those of us who look thin and trim on the outside — are facing the same consequences, fighting the same medical battles as the obese among us. The film explores why, how we got here, and what we can do about it.
