Description: The national Slow Food organization has declared a Day of Action on Saturday, September 17, in order to challenge the nation to come together, share a meal, and converse about what needs to change with the food in our country. However, this isn’t any old meal…
Your challenge is to “take back the value meal” by cooking a “slow food” meal for $5 or less per person! As Slow Food president Josh Viertel said, “Slow food shouldn’t have to cost more than fast food.”
You can approach this challenge in 3 different ways on September 17th:
1. Have your own $5/person meal! Host a potluck where people bring food that costs less than $5/person to prepare, or just cook for yourself or your family. The only thing that all these meals need to have in common is that they need to reflect slow food values (local, fresh, sustainable food), and cost no more than $5/person.
2. Attend our Slow Food St. Louis group picnic at Tower Grove Park! The picnic will be held to coincide with the market on Saturday, September 17 – we’ll eat at noon. Bring a meal for yourself that uses local, sustainable ingredients and was prepared for less than $5 per person (so if you’re attending the picnic as a pair, your meal can cost up to $10). We’d love to sit and eat with you!
3. Visit restaurants who are participating in this challenge for their $5 meal special! Restaurant information coming soon.
Whether you do any of all of the above, I encourage you to register your event, regardless of size (cooking for yourself? Still register!). The more events St. Louis has, the more Slow Food national sees us supporting their mission!
